NSFNET - 1986

"[The ARPANET] always was the Internet, as it was the only network and just grew. However, for many people it became the Internet when NSF allowed it to go public."
- Larry Roberts, 3/21/13
In the early 1980's, the National Science Foundation (NSF) developed the NSF Network (NSFNET), making high-performance computers available to academic users across the country.

The NSFNET performed better than any other network. Older networks like the ARPANET became less useful.

The NSFNET opened the Internet to almost everyone, forming the backbone of today's Internet.
