For computers to communicate over large distances, the best solution was to utilize the existing telephone lines. The modem sent digital signals over these analog phone lines. Today, these types of modems are called dial-up modems.

The modem is crucial; modems still facilitate data transfer across the Internet today. Without modems, there would be no easy method of long-distance data transfer.
